A 30-year-old Bangladeshi woman with no family history of obesity, was brought to Manipal Hospitals with complaints of obesity (weighing 172 kg), sleep apnoea and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease that progressed to cirrhosis. She was advised to undergo Bariatric laparoscopic surgery. Doctors at the hospital pointed out that Bariatric laparoscopic surgery is safe and helps in gradual weight loss. In this surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced, as a result of which the eating capacity of the person gets curtailed. Consequently, the absorption of food from the intestine is reduced and the metabolic rate increases. The surgery also leads to the reversal of diabetes, hypertension, and polycystic ovarian cancer. It is also known to reverse the chances of various emanating from obesity among women. There are no adverse effects and very little likelihood of gaining weight after therapy. The patient weighed 152 kg when she was first brought to them around three months ago. Despite her best efforts, she was unable to drop weight. She was one of the heaviest patients successfully treated at this hospital. She is quite satisfied with the surgery results and is doing well post-discharge.
