News Desk, News Nation 360: As part of the annual World Organ Donation Day celebrations, Manipal Hospitals Kolkata initiated ‘Shuruwat Ghar Se’—an awareness campaign and internal pledge drive for organ donation, aimed at initiating discussions within families and addressing the dire organ donation shortage in India, where 90,000 people await transplantation in a country that carries out 20,000+ transplants in a year. The occasion was marked by the presence of Dr Thankam S (Consultant – Fetal Medicine, Manipal Hospital Bengaluru), who narrated her personal journey of becoming a humanist by donating one of her kidneys to a stranger after searching for a decade. The event also saw the participation of leaders from the East region, such as Regional Director Dr Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Head of Medical Services Dr Shugota Chakrabarti, and many other eminent nephrologists, urologists, critical care and transplant surgeons from Manipal Hospitals in EM Bypass, Dhakuria and Mukundapur. Apart from felicitating their transplant teams and conducting a panel discussion to break social taboos of living and deceased donations, the hospital also opened its own organ donation kiosk for its patients, visitors and staff members.
