5G FWA Functionality is Successfully Demonstrated on mmWave by Ericsson and Airtel

News Desk, News Nation 360 : One of India's top telecom service providers, Bharti Airtel (Airtel), and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) have successfully demonstrated mmWave 5G functionality on the Airtel network. During the testing, peak speeds of 4.7Gbps were reached, proving that mmWave is suitable for situations where high network capacity is needed. With the help of Ericsson Silicon, the company's innovative software co-design and purpose-built hardware put it in a unique position to fully realise the potential of the high-band. With the help of Ericsson's mmWave portfolio for macro and street macro levels, Airtel can easily use FWA to provide high-capacity connectivity to city dwellers. Randeep Singh Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel stated that the testing's peak throughput assures them to implement mmWave for FWA applications. In addition to helping to deliver faster speeds, using FWA customer premises equipment (CPE) supported by 5G mmWave will allow them to reach the vast majority of users who are currently unconnected because of unreachable fibre connections. The efficient and scalable alternative to wired connections is fixed wireless access (FWA). When targeting densely populated urban areas with a high density of mobile devices, homes, and business areas, the 5G high-band or millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum is a valuable resource. With the high-band, above 24 gigahertz (GHz), Airtel can provide capacity, low latency, and unprecedented peak rates. By the end of 2029, there will be 330 million FWA connections globally, up from 130 million at the end of 2023, according to Ericsson's FWA handbook 2024 Insights. This amounts to 18,000 fixed broadband connections worldwide. Approximately 85% of the 330 million connections predicted will be over 5G. Fifty of the 121 service providers offering 5G FWA as of November 2023 are located in emerging markets.
