News Desk, News Nation 360 : Prepare to luxuriate in the deliciousness of mangoes at the Ajeemganj Mango Festival, organised by Murshidabad Heritage Development Society (MHDS) and House of Sheherwali, which will take place from June 1st to June 30th. This month-long event coincides with peak mango season, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the vast world of mangoes. Murshidabad, a district in West Bengal historically renowned for its diverse and significant mango varieties cultivated since the era of the Nawabs, is preparing for its biggest-ever Mango Festival. The 10th edition of the month-long celebration will commence in June, showcasing the city's famed nawabi mangoes, which blend rich taste and heritage, as stated by Pradip Chopra, President of the Murshidabad Heritage Development Society. The festival will highlight the historical importance of mangoes in the region, including how Mughal Emperor Akbar promoted their cultivation and cross-breeding, contributing to India's over 500 varieties; Murshidabad alone
boasts around 150. Notable mango varieties from Murshidabad include the uniquely flavored Kohitoor; Nawab Pasand, Inayat Pasand, and Ranipasand, named after historical figures; Champa, known for its distinct aroma; Bimli, named after Mir Jafar's maid; Anaras, resembling pineapple in flavor; Saranga, dedicated to sarangi players; Gulabkhas, with a subtle rose fragrance; Mohanbhog, offered as a tribute to Lord Krishna; Peyarafuli, featuring a guava-like taste; Kishanbhog, distinguished by its soft, creamy texture and pineapple hints; and Chandankosa, carrying a soothing sandalwood fragrance. Other prominent varieties produced in the area include Himsagar, Langra, Lakshmanbhog, along with historically significant Nawab-era gems like Bhawani, Rani, Bhabani, Molamjam, and Shahdulla. Guests staying at the House of Sheherwali can enjoy a unique daily mango trail, visiting local orchards to hand-pick and taste mangoes directly from the trees, and later savouring seasonal mangoes with serene Ganga views. All visitors are invited to explore mango orchards, delve into the fruit's history and cultivation, and discover rare local varieties, celebrating Murshidabad’s vibrant mango heritage at Ajeemganj.
