News Desk. News Nation 360: By successfully executing a life-saving Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) on a 26-year-old pregnant woman bearing twins, Manipal Hospitals EM Bypass in Kolkata has reached a significant milestone in maternal-fetal interventional cardiology. At 24 weeks of pregnancy, Rojee Kumari, a patient from Bhagalpur, arrived in critical condition. She had NYHA Class IV heart failure, which is the most severe level, along with severe pulmonary hypertension and critical rheumatic mitral stenosis. The emergency, minimally invasive catheter-based procedure was carried out by a specialised multidisciplinary team under the direction of Dr. Dilip Kumar (Director Cath Lab and Senior Interventional Cardiologist), who used advanced radiation protection to successfully widen the narrowed heart valve through a cautious two-stage balloon dilation. On May 12, 2026, the woman gave birth to a healthy boy and girl on May 12, 2026, thanks to the quick drop in heart pressure that stabilised her without causing foetal distress. This breakthrough—along with a similar successful intervention by the team on an IVF twin pregnancy in 2023—establishes what may be the first documented clinical case series of its kind globally, demonstrating how sophisticated, precision-driven cardiac interventions can resolve life-threatening pregnancy emergencies, thanks to financial concessions made by the hospital for the working-class family.
