News Desk, News Nation 360 : Healthcare professionals and organisations are uniting on World COPD Day to increase public awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a chronic respiratory illness that affects millions of people globally. The topic for this year, "Breathe Easier, Live Better," emphasises how crucial early detection, efficient treatment, and preventative actions are to enhancing the quality of life for those with COPD. One of the main causes of respiratory morbidity is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is frequently brought on by prolonged exposure to tobacco smoking, air pollution, or occupational risks. Ignoring symptoms such as persistent cough, dyspnoea, and recurrent respiratory infections can delay diagnosis and treatment. Dr Sujan Bardhan, Senior Consultant Pulmonologist, Narayana Hospital, RN Tagore Hospital, Mukandapur, highlighted that if untreated, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can have catastrophic consequences for lung function. It's important to pay attention to early symptoms like continuous coughing or dyspnoea during everyday activities. Adherence to treatment and prompt diagnosis using pulmonary function testing can greatly enhance patient outcomes. Preventive measures include avoiding smoking, reducing exposure to air pollutants, doing regular respiratory workouts, and getting the right vaccines. Hospitals and organisations throughout the city are offering free spirometry tests, lung health education lectures, and workshops in observance of the day. These programs seek to support COPD patients and their families, promote early detection, and lessen the disease's burden.
