News Desk, News Nation 360 : With the opening of the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre, which has a state-of-the-art Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit, Manipal Hospitals Kolkata enhanced its oncology capabilities in honour of World Cancer Day. The hospital also introduced KAWACH – A Community Health Screening Programme, a Manipal Foundation effort in partnership with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), further demonstrating its dedication to prevention and early diagnosis. The launching of the Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at Manipal Hospitals Kolkata is a remarkable milestone in the fight against cancer, especially in Eastern India. According to the data provided by ICMR, West Bengal, along with its neighbouring states, is experiencing a high incidence of head and neck, breast, and gastrointestinal cancers, of which nearly 60% are diagnosed at a late stage. With its multiple integrated services, the new Centre hopes to provide a high level of care, especially in preventing, treating, and supporting all cancer survivors in an integrated, multi-disciplinary, one-stop model. Among its many remarkable features, one of the most impressive is the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, headed by Prof. (Dr.) Rajib De. Blood cancers such as leukaemia and myeloma account for approximately 8% of the cancer incidence in India.

BMT is curative therapy for these cancers, though its efficacy is extremely low. India does fewer than 3,000 a year, though the need is greater. With the launch of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, the Gachibowli campus is making a quantum leap ahead in offering curative therapy for cancer patients. The programme was graced by Firhad Hakim, Hon’ble Mayor, Kolkata Municipal Corporation; Narayan Swaroop Nigam, IAS, Principal Secretary (Health); Ananya Banerjee, Councillor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (Ward 109); Harinarayan Sharma, CEO, Manipal Foundation; Dr Surendra Kumar Dabas, Chairman, Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre and Onco Robotic Surgeries, North West Cluster; Dr Murali Srinivasan, Chief of Medical Services, Manipal Health Enterprise Pvt. Ltd.; Dr Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Director – East Region; Dr Sourav Datta, Director – Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care (Mukundapur, Salt Lake & Siliguri Clusters); and Komal Dashora, Cluster Director – Mukundapur Cluster.
