The Howrah Surgeon Who Claims That the Point Was Never the Number

News Desk, News Nation 360: Narayana Hospital, Howrah, created history in Eastern India on World Robotic Surgery Day by performing nine consecutive robotic surgeries with the 4th Generation da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. The robotic procedures included robotic cholecystectomy, robotic appendicectomy, ventral hernia repair, and complicated inguinal hernia repairs. Dr Shashank Shukla, Consultant – General, Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgery, along with his team of surgical, anaesthesia, and perioperative nurses, performed the surgeries. Starting from 30-year-olds to 90-year-olds, the patient base was diverse, and the treatment involved a wide range of procedures. The surgeries were more of a demonstration for young surgeons than a competition, said Dr Shukla and Facility Director Ajit Kumar Bellamkonda, adding that robotic consoles are being adopted globally by surgeons as they allow for 3D high-definition visualisation, eliminate hand tremors, and restore the natural range of motion of the wrists and fingers. Moreover, there is a growing need for minimally invasive procedures that reduce post-operative pain, blood loss, and recovery time.
