News Desk, News Nation 360: A specialised surgical team successfully removed a large, 1.41 kg uterus filled with fibroids from a 51-year-old woman who had life-threatening anaemia, according to Fortis Hospital, Anandapur. This is a rare and extremely complex gynaecological treatment. The advanced robotic-assisted total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy (removal of both fallopian tubes) was carried out on a high-risk patient under the direction of Dr Sujata Datta, Senior Consultant Gynaecologist and Robotic Surgeon. The patient's condition was significantly complicated by obesity (BMI of 30), diabetes, and extensive internal scarring from two previous major abdominal surgeries. The patient's haemoglobin fell to a crucial 8 g/dL after six months of unrelenting, severe monthly bleeding that standard hormonal treatments and iron infusions were unable to control. Her uterus had grown to the size of a 26-week pregnancy, measuring 21 × 9.2 × 17.2 cm, according to advanced diagnostic imaging. This was caused by several uterine leiomyomas, the largest of which spanned 13.7 × 10 cm, and widespread adenomyosis. Dr Datta's team carefully dissected the enormous mass and removed it using a controlled naval port method, using the DaVinci robotic system to precisely go through deep surgical adhesions and protect the surrounding ureters. The advanced surgical intervention, which was facilitated by Ashish Mukherjee, the facility director, resulted in minimal intraoperative blood loss, allowing the patient's haemoglobin to stabilise at 10.6 g/dL post-surgery. It also ensured a quick, painless recovery, allowing the patient to be released in a completely stable condition within a week of the procedure.
