News Desk, News Nation 360: By successfully executing over 20,000 corneal transplants through its specialised Prova Eye Bank, Disha Eye Hospitals has accomplished a historic medical milestone in Eastern India, significantly improving the lives of thousands of patients who suffer from corneal blindness. Under the visionary clinical leadership of Director and Medical Director Dr Samar Kumar Basak, the hospital's Cornea Services department has grown rapidly from its modest institutional inception in 1997 with just two procedures. As of June 2026, the department had achieved a record-breaking 20,211 successful transplants. The hospital has collected 27,252 corneas in the last 29 years, of which 14,872 were obtained through the crucial Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme (HCRP) and 12,380 through voluntary public eye commitments. Disha has maintained a remarkable, industry-leading utilisation rate of over 74%, significantly surpassing the national Indian average of a little over 50%, by carefully using 11,110 HCRP corneas and 9,101 voluntary contributions. The historic accomplishment, praised by Chairman & Managing Director Dr Debasish Bhattacharya for exhibiting tremendous operational resilience during the severe disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the institution's strong infrastructure expansion and potent public awareness messaging, solidifying its ongoing humanitarian campaign to eradicate visual impairment and expedite access to cutting-edge, sight-restoring ophthalmic care throughout the region.
