SERVES FOR NATION

News Desk, News Nation 360 : Three women, one of whom was 18-year-old college student Shrestha Barua of Kolkata, adopted Buddhist monastic life, wearing saffron robes and swearing celibacy, motivated by the preachings of Gautama Buddha. Their initiation was carried out by Dr. Arunjyoti Bhikkhu Bhante at the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Tollygunge Moore Avenue Buddha Samiti at the Sambodhi Buddha Vihara in Tollygunge on Maghi Purnima. The day

had a procession of monks, Buddha Puja, Sangha Dana, and a seminar called "Women's Freedom in Buddhism: Past and Present" and was graced by West Bengal Youth Welfare Minister Arup Biswas, other dignitaries, and Taiwanese nuns, symbolizing increased participation of women in disseminating Buddhist teachings. Dr. Arunjyoti Bhikkhu emphasised that Gautama Buddha was the first to transcend caste, religion, race, and gender by establishing a formal monastic and missionary system for women more than 2,568 years ago. Although Buddhist monks have historically maintained celibacy, there hasn't been an official nuns' society in India up until now to ensure transparency and clarity. However, it is hoped that more people will learn about Buddha's teachings because the ladies of Kolkata are committing their lives to propagating his message of non-violence. Additionally, the Tollygunge Buddha Samiti announced several events that will take place all year long.
