News Desk, News Nation 360 : Manipal Hospitals is one of the prominent healthcare service providers in India. They recently organized a special medical event. The event aimed to create awareness about the new trends in sleep health. Some of the senior doctors from different fields of medicine were present at this event. Dr. Dipankar Datta, who is a senior ENT and Sleep Apnea Surgeon at Manipal Hospital Broadway, was one of the attending doctors. They spoke about new methods of diagnosing and treating sleep issues. They also spoke about how sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea impact general health. This event was held following World Sleep Day, which is celebrated on March 14th. Dr. Vijaya Krishnan was the Chief Guest for the event. He is the President of the Indian Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apnea (IASSA). He discussed his extensive experiences with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. He also discussed novel surgical techniques that are revolutionizing the way surgeons conceptualize patient outcomes. Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, is an illness. In this illness, the airway of a person gets clogged at times when they sleep. This issue may not be evident, yet it can severely damage a person's life. It can even cause death. OSA makes individuals not breathe many times in the night. OSA also

makes individuals snore loudly, which can be disturbing. Individuals with OSA tend to feel drowsy during the day. They can also experience morning headaches. Most of the time, individuals do not know they have this condition. If it is left undiagnosed, it leads to severe health complications. Some of these complications are heart disease, high blood pressure, and mental retardation. Globally, being overweight is one of the biggest reasons why individuals develop sleep apnea. But in India and surrounding nations, genes also make it more difficult to determine whether an individual has OSA. For individuals whose airways are obstructed due to their body structure, surgery may be required to assist them. Dr Dipankar Datta, Senior Consultant ENT and Sleep Apnea Surgeon, Manipal Hospital Broadway, stated that not only can sleep apnoea cause loud snoring, but it can also negatively affect heart health, cognitive function, and general well-being. CPAP machines provide short-term respite, but they are costly and uncomfortable. However, surgery offers a long-term cure by clearing structural blockages in the upper airway, allowing patients to sleep without the need for outside assistance. The procedure significantly improves quality of life and is less invasive.
