News Desk, News Nation 360: The Indian Plastics Federation (IPF) and Kolkata-based business conglomerate Tandhan Group have initiated a joint Zero-Waste Durga Puja campaign at seven key pandals viz. Tala Prottoy, College Square, Harish Park Bayam Samiti, Abasar Sarbojonin Durgotsab Samiti (Bhawanipur), Singhi Park, Mudiali Club and Salt Lake Central Park, which proposes to incorporate source segregation and circular recycling as part of the grand festival event, with institutional support from the state leadership, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC). Colour-coded collection bins, volunteer sorters and vendor coordination at food courts and heavily-trafficked pedestrian routes will facilitate channelising the segregated plastic polymers to secondary recyclers who will further process it into furniture and institutional use like tables and chairs; meanwhile, the organic and wet waste will be diverted towards composting and bio-fertilisers. IPF President Amit Agarwal emphasised shifting the public mindset to 'Know plastics' through scientific source segregation, while Tandhan Group Director Prachi Jalan and Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister Dr Subrata Gupta said that making a change in the daily lifestyle of people across major puja venues will create a lasting impact that could be replicated across the country in years to come.
