News Desk, News Nation 360 : In Kolkata, the famous 7th edition of the Disha Samman 2024 took place recently, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya. Presenting the Disha Samman, the largest eye care network in Eastern India's Disha Eye Hospitals seeks to reward individuals and organisations that dedicate their lives to the benefit of visually impaired people. This year's recipients include Akul Biswas, a visually impaired man who founded Jharkhali Sabuj Bahini in the Sundarbans, a teacher of environmental science for the poor children and tourists, and Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha, led by Dibyendu Barua, for encouraging chess as an entertaining sport for the sightless. Two hundred tiger-widow women who work tirelessly to save mangrove
forests and provide the people with sufficient defence against tiger attacks make up Jharkhali Sabuj Bahini. Dr Dhriti Banerjee, Director of the Zoological Survey of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India; Tanushree Shankar, Renowned Danseuse and Choreographer; Pathikrit Basu, Director; Abhijit Guha, Actor; Narayan Sinha, Sculptor; and Dr Debashish Bhattacharya, Chairman & Managing Director, Disha Eye Hospitals were among the distinguished guests at Disha Samman 2024. Apart from them is Anil Das, a creative sculptor who makes wooden thrones for the idols of the gods and a visionless resident of Pandua, Hoogly. The people in the Pandua region call him "Drishtihin Vishwakarma."
