News Desk, News Nation 360 : Fortis Hospital Anandapur successfully performed a complicated 12-hour brain surgery on a 40-year-old woman from Yangon, Myanmar, to remove a huge brain tumour the size of a lemon. The procedure was led by Dr G.R. Vijay Kumar, Director of Neurosurgery at Fortis Anandapur. The tumour's size, location, and intertwined position due to its proximity to vital brain regions made the surgery especially difficult. A patient experiencing severe headaches, loss of balance, and deteriorating vision over four months was admitted to Fortis Anandapur with complete vision loss in one eye and paralysis on one side of her body, where thorough examination confirmed a large clinoidal meningioma pressing against the optic nerves, optic chiasma, and principal brain blood vessels, which is one of the most difficult tumors to treat since even small surgical mistakes would result in permanent blindness or paralysis, yet the surgical team decided on a complicated craniotomy and microsurgical excision to deal with the tumor's size and critical location, working for over 12 hours to painstakingly dissect the tightly ensheathed tumor from essential structures and remove it successfully without impairing movement, vision, or speech, resulting in the patient making a remarkable recovery with improving strength and vision, now walking with assistance and set to make a complete recovery over time. Speaking on the case, Dr G. R. Vijay Kumar, Director, Neurosurgery, Fortis Anandapur, stated that that was one of the most difficult brain tumour instances they had seen. The tumour was enormous, measuring 7.7 × 4.3 × 5.8 cm (about the size of a huge lemon) and positioned in a region of the brain that governs vision and motor function. The cancer was intertwined with essential blood vessels and nerves, making each step of the procedure critical. Such procedures necessitate extreme precision, patience, and teamwork. The fact that they were able to totally remove the cancer and see the patient recover nicely is quite rewarding.
