SERVES FOR NATION
News Desk, News Nation 360 : Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL), a prominent developing markets corporation, has released a poignant digital film called "Hands That Speak" in honour of International Labour Day. With a sincere homage to workers with disabilities at GCPL's flagship greenfield manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, this program raises awareness of workforce diversity and inclusivity. In the movie, GCPL staff members—including those with speech and hearing impairments—tell their stories in Indian Sign Language (ISL), with subtitles for those of us who haven't learnt the language yet. Silence no longer limits them; their hands become strong, accurate, and proud voices. Against the backdrop of a busy factory floor, the movie celebrates not just what people do but also who they are, redefining communication and participation. Sandhya Ramesh, General Manager - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL), stated that the dedication of GCPL's Chengalpattu factory to equity and respect motivates significant change in the workplace and beyond. "Hands That Speak" honours the amazing contributions made by those with disabilities to their workforce. On Labour Day, they celebrate the spirit and uniqueness that go into the work and the labour itself. To increase employment accessibility and equity, they hope that this movie will inspire discussions and action across industries. Godrej Consumer Products Ltd. (GCPL) has initiated a movement to advocate for equity in employment for persons with disabilities (PwDs), pointing out that while there are almost 30 million PwDs in India, only 11% are employed meaningfully. The movement demands systemic change towards genuinely inclusive workplaces. As a part of this initiative, GCPL has launched a movie called 'Hands That Speak', narrated in Indian Sign Language with subtitles, where workers with hearing and speech disabilities recount their tale through action. The movie depicts their hands not only as work tools but as a symbol of pride, identity, and silent strength, rewriting classic definitions of voice and contribution by depicting a world where silence is a language and contribution is by deliberate action. 'Hands That Speak' is one aspect of GCPL's larger effort to encourage a more inclusive workforce. GCPL's commitment is also evidenced through their recently commissioned Chengalpattu plant in Tamil Nadu, with 5% representation from PwDs and LGBTQIA+ communities, along with 50% women staff, to shatter structural and social barriers and empower individuals with different impairments to give their best and be proud to contribute to the workforce.
