Narayana Hospital in Howrah Performed the First Robotic Surgery in Eastern India Along With Heated Chemotherapy

News Desk, News Nation 360: Narayana Hospital, Howrah, has performed eastern India’s first-ever Robotic Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) Plus Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, also known as HIPEC, on a 42-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Stage 2IC ovarian cancer. After undergoing six months of Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by targeted therapy, the patient’s tumour had successfully shrunk, and her cancer marker levels or CA125 protein in the blood, were reduced from 1,158 to 10.3. The patient was advised to undergo a minimally invasive robotic surgery instead of traditional open surgery by a team of doctors led by Dr Kaustav Basu and comprising Dr Suman Mallik, Dr Manas Khan and Facility Director Ajit Kumar Bellamkonda. The five-hour robotic procedure saw the complete removal of the visible tumour and further involved the perfusion of heated Cisplatin chemotherapy solution at 42 degrees Celsius to kill hidden cancer cells in the abdomen. As a result, the patient was able to recover well and was discharged within three days of the treatment without any post-surgery complications.
