News Desk, News Nation 360 : As the first hospital in West Bengal to complete 14 robotic kidney transplants in the last two years, Narayana RN Tagore Hospital in Mukundapur has become a leader in robotic kidney transplant operations. The therapeutic necessity of these 14 procedures is what distinguishes them; in each instance, the patients' obesity made regular open transplant surgery impractical. Before being eligible for a transplant, patients with a high BMI are usually encouraged to lose weight or have bariatric surgery. But for some high-risk patients, the introduction of robotic technology at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital has created a new therapeutic avenue, removing the need for weight loss or further surgery. Dr. Forqan Babu Shaikh, Consultant - General Surgery, Narayana RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, stated that Robotic kidney transplantation has completely changed the way we treat patients with high-risk renal failure. The procedure of performing kidney transplants was open surgery for many years. The method is now safer, more accurate, and better equipped to manage complicated conditions like obesity due to the introduction of robotic devices. The robotic method helps surgeons operate on delicate blood vessels with unmatched accuracy by using 8mm keyhole incisions and offering a 3D, high-magnification vision. In obese patients, when standard surgery carries additional dangers, this lessens discomfort, expedites healing, and avoids post-operative problems. All 14 procedures employed live donors. Recipients were between 35 and 55 years of age. These were extremely unique cases. There was no other surgical possibility. This reiterates that robotic kidney transplant is selected for clinical purposes. It is not for cosmetic purposes yet. Narayana RN Tagore Hospital typically performs about 500 open kidney transplants annually. Robotic procedures are only reserved for the most complicated, high-risk patients. The rise in such cases is attributed to an alarming increase in lifestyle disorders. India is facing a rapidly increasing issue of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This is due to a progressive rise in diabetes and obesity in all age groups. Robotic kidney transplantation has become the only viable, safe option for most of such patients. The procedure remains costly. But specialists hold that since robotic surgeries are made widely available, they could be prescribed more frequently. Even for cosmetic purposes. This is because they produce less scarring and have quicker recovery periods.
