SERVES FOR NATION

News Desk, News Nation 360: To mark World Organ Donation Day, Manipal Hospitals Kolkata launched their internal campaign and pledging drive, ‘Shuruwat Ghar Se’, encouraging people/families to initiate open and informed household conversations to de-stigmatize organ donations, and create awareness about the need for more donors in a country where only around 18% of transplants happen through deceased donations, and where almost 90,000 people were on the waiting list as of early 2026. The event witnessed an insightful address by Dr Thankam S (Consultant – Fetal Medicine, Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, Bengaluru), who generously shared her decade-long journey of selflessly donating a kidney to a stranger suffering from end-stage renal disease. The event also saw the participation of local leaders and renowned transplant surgeons from the realms of nephrology, urology, critical care, and hemato-oncology, including Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Dr. Shugota Chakrabarti, Dr. Dilip Pahari, Dr. Upal Sengupta, Dr. Avinandan Banerjee, and Dr. Rajiv Sinha, who unveiled a kiosk dedicated to organ donation pledging drives to facilitate the smooth process and organize panel discussions to tackle the hesitations and challenges that hinder the transformation of good intent into life-saving organ donations.
