News Desk, News Nation 360 : Under the skilled care of Dr. Biswajyoti Guha, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, a 35-year-old woman who had overcome ovarian cancer at the age of eight gave birth to a healthy baby girl naturally. This is a remarkable tale of perseverance and medical success. This uncommon occurrence is the third delivery of its kind involving childhood ovarian cancer survivors and the first to take place without the use of assisted reproductive technology, according to Dr. Biswajyoti Guha and the hospital. Manipal Hospital in Kolkata handled a complicated pregnancy case of Poulomi Ghosh, a 35-year-old from Jadavpur, who was referred at 30 weeks with severe upper abdominal pain and a suspected perforated appendix. She was initially treated with IV antibiotics on admission under Dr. Sanjoy Mandal. An MRI later confirmed her appendix was normal, and she could be treated conservatively. Her obstetric condition was carefully watched by Dr. Biswajyoti Guha, who observed the high complexity because of her unusual medical history and the subsequent development of severe obstetric cholestasis, which necessitated cautious liver function management. What made this case exceptional was Poulomi's experience of being diagnosed with a germ cell tumour in one of her ovaries at age 8, surgical removal, and chemotherapy. Despite the long odds, she became pregnant naturally without any fertility treatment, which is very rare for survivors with such a history, who usually need IVF. Her condition improved before delivery, and she gave birth to a healthy baby girl weighing 2.8 kg at term. Manipal Hospital reported this was their third case of pregnancy following childhood ovarian cancer necessitating ovary removal and chemotherapy, but the first involving natural conception at their centre.
