SERVES FOR NATION

News Desk, News Nation 360 : A group of specialists at Apollo Cancer Centre Kolkata accomplished India's first Robot-Assisted excision of a Prostatic Stromal Tumour of Uncertain Malignant Potential (STUMP) invading the rectum, marking a significant medical milestone. It's unknown if this type of tumour is malignant or just an abnormal growth in the tissue that supports the prostate gland. Together with a talented multidisciplinary team that included Dr Supratim Bhattacharyya, Consultant-Surgical Oncology, and Dr Amit Choraria, Consultant-Surgical Oncology, Dr Tarun Jindal, Senior Consultant-Uro Oncology, successfully oversaw the intricate procedure. A Myanmar patient with a rare prostatic stromal tumour of indefinite malignant potential (STUMP) that had invaded the rectum underwent a successful robot-assisted surgery at Apollo Cancer Centre, Kolkata, illustrating India's high-level medical capabilities in curing complex and rare ailments. This is a notable case because STUMP is so extremely rare, with fewer than 100 cases identified throughout the entire world, and the even less common performance of robotic surgery to treat it. The operating team utilized a minimally invasive robotic technique to remove the tumour and involved a rectal wall, taking advantage of the technology's increased accuracy to traverse the complex pelvic anatomy, under the guidance of sophisticated imaging studies that established the presence of the tumour and rectal invasion. The operation was associated with minimal blood loss, decreased postoperative pain, and an impressively brief recovery period, with the patient being discharged within three days. This milestone signals Apollo Cancer Centres' dedication to the latest medical technology and multi-disciplinary treatment, demonstrating India's increasing expertise in robotic surgery and giving new hope to patients with rare and complex cancers, as well as reinforcing the centre's image as a pioneer in holistic cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care.
