News Desk, News Nation 360: Dr Soumya Patra and her team at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur have achieved a milestone in modern medical history by installing a permanent pacemaker in a patient with a rare artificial bicaval valve setup. The patient was 62-year-old Shyamali Biswas, who suffered from complete heart block and had experienced severe heart failure in the past. In addition to heart failure, the patient underwent complex heart surgery involving her tricuspid valve. The artificial valves in her vena cava made it challenging to insert the pacemaker lead into her heart through the altered heart anatomy without compromising her artificial valves. The surgery has been described as India’s first case of its kind and only second in the world. The operation was carried out by Dr Soumya Patra and her team in cardiology, with Dr Subhasish Deb providing support to Dr Patra in the operation. The cardiology team used a special technique to avoid any interruption in her heart’s blood flow during surgery. The operation was successful in saving her life and has again proven the expertise of Manipal Hospital in handling complex and rare heart diseases in patients. The patient has been recovering with continued care and indicates a major breakthrough in India’s cardiology scene.
