News Desk, News Nation 360: A major medical breakthrough was achieved by the Narayana RN Tagore Hospital in Kolkata, as they successfully carried out the first Pectus Up procedure with a completely Indian surgical team. The patient, a 10-year-old boy, was operated on for Pectus Excavatum, or sunken chest, which had progressed from a cosmetic deformity to respiratory difficulties. This is the first Pectus Up procedure to be carried out in Northern or Eastern India. Pectus Up is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive technique for the correction of the deformity from the outside of the chest. Unlike the conventional Nuss procedure, which involves the insertion of a metal bar into the chest cavity near the heart and lungs, the Pectus Up procedure involves the insertion of a custom-made titanium device (imported from Spain) to lift the sternum from the outside of the chest. This procedure is free from lung deflation or entering the pleural cavity, thereby minimising the risk of pain. Milestones: 1) The surgical team, under the leadership of Prof. (Dr) Amitabha Chakrabarti and Dr Manujesh Bandhopadhyay, coordinated with overseas manufacturers for the custom-made device. 2) The child was ambulatory and pain-free within an hour of the procedure, which was completed within two hours, and was discharged after five days. 3) The cost of the special device was borne by the Royal Government of Bhutan. 4) Narayana Health leadership, including Abhijit C.P. and R. Venkatesh, stated, “This is a major breakthrough for Indian families, who can now access the best of the world-class, minimally invasive Pectus Up procedure for chest wall deformity correction within the country.”
