SERVES FOR NATION

News Desk, News Nation 360 : The 9th Clifford Hicks International Debate Competition, organised by the Calcutta Boys’ School Literary Society, concluded recently after a spirited five-day event held at the historic Town Hall, Kolkata. Since its inception in 2015 to honour former principal Clifford Hicks, who served from 1952 to 1974, the competition has become a prestigious platform for young orators. This year's debate topic was “The house believes that the use of psychological and persuasive techniques in advertising is morally wrong and unacceptable,” engaging students from over 80 schools nationally and internationally, competing in two categories: Category I for Classes XI and XII and Category II for Classes IX and X. Seven teams from each category reached the finals, where participants discussed real-world examples such as Nike’s 'Run Your Run' campaign and controversies around alcohol promotions and fairness creams. Notably, participants highlighted issues like consumer rights through the Consumer Protection Act and the power of persuasive advertising. The winners were La Martiniere for Girls, Kolkata (Category I) and The Bishops Co-ed School, Undri (Category II), with commendable runners-up including the Bishops Co-ed School and Calcutta Boys’ School. The event was marked by insightful debates, promoting critical thinking, ethical awareness, and public speaking excellence. Principal and secretary of Calcutta Boys' School, Raja McGee, stated that the event is more than simply a debate; it is a festival and a forum for not only camaraderie, but also approval, agreement, and disagreement.
