News Desk, News Nation 360: Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, Kolkata, successfully diagnosed and treated two hidden brain aneurysms with sophisticated neuro-interventional procedures, saving the life of a 61-year-old female patient who presented with recurring episodes of fainting and vomiting, whose symptoms were initially suspected to be caused by fluctuations in blood sugar levels secondary to longstanding diabetes. Given the severity and unusual nature of symptoms, a Digital Subtraction Angiogram (DSA) was done, which revealed two separate aneurysms within the arteries that were close to rupturing and causing potentially life-threatening bleeding into the brain. The multidisciplinary surgical team performed an endovascular procedure using catheters to successfully isolate the aneurysms from the brain. "In many cases, brain aneurysms can go undetected for decades. Patients only present when they are acutely unwell. This underlines the importance of doing imaging tests to help identify any ongoing or recurring symptoms – you should not automatically assume these are due to medical conditions," said Dr Sukalyan Purkayastha, Director – Neurointerventional & Endovascular Surgery, Imaging Sciences & Interventional Radiology.
