News Desk, News Nation 360 : A five-month-old infant boy from Nabadwip in Nadia district was recently operated upon successfully for a laparoscopic pyeloplasty at Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur. The minimally invasive operation, conducted by Dr. Subhasis Saha, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, repaired a severe blockage of the kidney caused by congenital hydronephrosis—a condition that results in the accumulation of urine and leads to swelling of the kidney due to obstruction. Pyeloplasty corrects the narrowing at the kidney-ureter junction, opening up the normal flow of urine and averting any further damage to the kidney. The child, Ayush Sen (changed name), was diagnosed antenatally, and by the age of five months had lost 20% of kidney function. His parents, Roma and Bijoy Sen (changed names), had kept coming back for treatment but had been told to wait for the intervention when he grew up. Recommended by nephrologist Dr. Lalit Kumar Agarwal, Dr. Saha recognised the gravity of the situation immediately and conducted the surgery on 29th July through just a single 5mm and two 3mm incisions. Ayush recovered nicely with no abdominal incision and was discharged within 48 hours. This is an important milestone as this kind of advanced surgery in an infant continues to be a rarity in India. Dr. Subhasis Saha, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, stated that several kidney dilatations discovered during prenatal ultrasounds resolve on their own. However, some actual blockages can significantly impair kidney function if left untreated. In Ayush's instance, there was a clear obstruction at the kidney-ureter junction. Infant laparoscopic pyeloplasty is performed quite rarely, especially on children under one year of age, even though adult laparoscopic pyeloplasty is now common. In Eastern India, these operations are still very uncommon, despite being common in other regions of the nation. But they've been doing this for years with success. In reality, since 2021, they have performed seven laparoscopic pyeloplasties on infants at their institution alone, and since 2013, they have performed almost 70 laparoscopic pyeloplasties on children ages 1 to 16. Less pain, a speedy recovery, the absence of noticeable scars, and—above all—the prompt maintenance of kidney function are the advantages.
