News Desk, News Nation 360 : Manipal Hospitals, the largest healthcare network in Eastern India, has established a benchmark in cardiac care with the successful completion of a complex Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR) on Rabindra Kumar Sarkar, a diabetic and hypertensive 72-year-old patient. Under the guidance of Dr. Kaushik Mukherjee, Head Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) and Dr. Shubhabrata Banerjee, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, a CT total aortography confirmed a rare and life-threatening aneurysm—a swelling of the aorta—perilously close to brain and arm arteries. This aneurysm was also compressing a nerve that supplied the voice box, leading to recurring hoarseness, an uncommon condition called Ortner's Syndrome or Cardio-vocal syndrome that occurs in only 1% to 3% of cases in India. Despite the tricky and risky site of the aneurysm immediately after the left subclavian artery in the descending thoracic aorta, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, doctors were able to successfully implant the stent graft without open-heart surgery or a bypass. The procedure sealed the aneurysm successfully while leaving vital vessels intact. Rabindra Kumar Sarkar received the procedure on May 26, 2025, and was home within two days, a testament to the team's innovative surgical planning and skill in minimally invasive cardiac treatment. Elaborating on this rare case, Dr Kaushik Mukherjee, Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, stated that Rabindra Kumar Sarkar was presented to us with hoarseness of voice, an unusual indication of an aortic aneurysm, the rarest of rare conditions. In fact, given his age and underlying comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, he was not a good candidate for open surgical repair of an aneurysm via thoracotomy. That is why we chose a minimally invasive TEVAR technique. It was technically challenging due to the aneurysm's essential placement, but we were able to properly seal it without disrupting vital blood flow, all while avoiding the risks of open surgery. His smooth recuperation is a credit to the team's planning. His voice has already begun to improve, and he is now on the way to full recovery.
