SERVES FOR NATION

News Desk, News Nation 360 : The Astor Kolkata's inaugural Khasi Festival, a colourful display of Northeast India's native tastes, takes you on a culinary adventure through the Meghalayan highlands. Chef Juban Mawphniang, who flew down from Meghalaya specifically for the occasion to curate the meal, is the centrepiece of this one-of-a-kind experience. The festival, which is scheduled to take place from July 25 to August 10, 2025, at lunch (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.) and supper (7 p.m. to 11.45 p.m.), provides guests with a unique chance to enjoy the hearty, traditional Khasi food.

The price of a lunch for two would start at about ₹1000. Amit Kobat, General Manager, The Astor Kolkata, stated that The Astor is embracing its mission to honour India's culinary diversity one plate at a time, one tale at a time, with this event. In addition to offering a unique glimpse into a lesser-known cuisine, the Khasi Festival fosters a deep cultural interchange between the Northeast and the centre of Kolkata. They have already organised a number of these culinary festivals and cultural gatherings, and they want to organise many more in the future. The specially designed menu showcases authentic Khasi comfort and taste, with regional favourites like Doh Syiar Neiiong (black sesame-cooked chicken), Doh Sniang Roast (roast sliced pork), Dohkhlie, a sour pork salad, Jadoh using chicken and rice—a staple Khasi dish—Kharang (smoked fish curry served with steamed rice), and Syrwa Tit, a thin chicken and mushroom soup. For vegetarians, the offering consists of Khasi-style mixed vegetable dishes, sticky rice, and soft flatbreads called Putharo for a balanced and comprehensive choice for every palate. To conclude, visitors are served traditional sweets such as Sakin Gata, a steamed sticky rice cake, and pineapple topped with black salt and chilli flakes. As a last act of hospitality and respect steeped in Khasi culture, each meal is concluded with Kwai, the traditional offering of betel nut, representing friendship and affectionate regard.
