News Desk, News Nation 360 : For several blood diseases, bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is the most effective treatment option. Common individuals frequently experience panic when they are told they have a blood cancer (leukaemia), thalassaemia, aplastic anaemia, lymphoma (Non-Hodgkin's), myeloma, immune deficiency syndromes, genetic bone marrow failure, or other blood-related illnesses. Other therapies might provide short-term respite, but the disease's effects last a lifetime, causing financial, emotional, and physical hardship. Early BMT greatly improves the patient's chances of full recovery, according to Dr. Tufan Dalui and Dr. Rajeev De, renowned haematologists and the organising chairpersons of the Third Annual Conference of Eastern India Blood Marrow Cellular Therapy (EIBMCT 2025). Bone marrow transplant, or BMT, is a first-line therapy for blood diseases, dependent on the bone marrow, the body's blood-making tissue. Because bone marrow blood stem cells belong to different groups known as HLA (human leukocyte antigens), transplantation must be successful with an HLA match between the donor and recipient. Two types of BMT exist: autologous, in which the patient's healthy marrow is transplanted, and allogeneic, in which the donor is another individual. A sibling is the optimal donor with better possibilities of an HLA match, ideally. One of the parents could also be a donor with roughly a 50% possibility of compatibility. Treatment here in Kolkata and in Eastern India follows international standards, but at a relatively lower cost compared to many other Indian states. 23 centres in North-Eastern and Eastern India perform bone marrow transplantations, and each of these centres is involved in the associated professional conference, indicating a region-wide concerted initiative in treating blood disorders via BMT.
