News Desk, News Nation 360 : Narayana Health is organising one of the largest HLA Testing Camps in Kolkata on December 21, 2025, in collaboration with DKMS, Thalassemics India, Coal India, Federation of Blood Donor Organisations of India, and Paschim Bangal Sikkim Prantiya Marwari Yuva Manch. The program, coordinated by Dr Sunil Bhat, Director and Head of Paediatric Haematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation at Narayana Health City in Bangalore, seeks to evaluate over 500 thalassaemia patients and their families for prospective bone marrow transplant (BMT) matches. Thalassemia is a serious health challenge in India, and more so in Eastern India, where hundreds of children depend on repeated blood transfusions. Narayana Health brings hope through its advanced BMT program at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, with over 2,500 transplants performed, emerging as one of the largest and most trusted centres in the country. The hospital will organise a Mega HLA Testing Camp on December 21, 2025, in Kolkata, with the intention of screening over 500 thalassemia patients and their family members to find a match for BMT. Free HLA testing will be provided for children below 12 years who have been diagnosed with thalassemia, along with adequate provisions of finance in case a suitable match is found. The program is being spearheaded by Dr Sunil Bhat, Senior Consultant and Head, Pediatric Haematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant, Narayana Health, who firmly believes that early testing followed by timely transplantation can offer a definite cure, thereby transforming lives from dependence on regular blood transfusions to a healthy, normal life. The program collaborates with several organisations to make curative treatment accessible and affordable for all the affected children. Dr Sunil Bhat expressed the goal of the initiative and stated that their goal is to make curative treatment a reality for all children with thalassaemia. This camp assists HLA-matched families in taking the next critical step towards transplantation. Early detection and intervention can have a significant impact on a child's future. To promote widespread participation, Narayana Health is cooperating with thalassaemia centres in government medical colleges throughout West Bengal, as well as blood banks, Red Cross societies, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
