News Desk, News Nation 360 : The successful completion of Eastern India's first robotic mitral valve replacement (MVR) procedure marks a significant medical milestone. Leading the procedure was Dr. Lalit Kapoor, Senior Consultant in Cardiac Surgery (Adult & Paediatric), at Narayana Hospital, RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur. Suman Devi, a 32-year-old rheumatic heart disease and severe mitral stenosis patient presenting with shortness of breath and chest pain, came to Narayana Hospital following a previous balloon mitral valvotomy in 2012; her reports indicated severe mitral restenosis, and given her desire for a good cosmetic result, rapid recovery, and minimal hospital stay, the medical team chose to carry out a robotic mitral valve replacement surgery, which was successfully done without any complication, taking advantage of the hospital's experience in robotic cardiac surgeries. In comparison to traditional ways, robotic surgery can give more precise treatments and faster recovery times. This case represents a significant advancement in the medical treatment of mitral stenosis in the region. Patients with cardiac issues may have more hope and better treatment options in the future because of the capacity to undertake such a complicated procedure with sophisticated robotic help. Dr. Lalit Kapoor, Senior Consultant - Cardiac Surgery (Adult & Paediatric), emphasised the importance of adopting advanced surgical techniques in improving patient outcomes. He stated that in cardiac surgery, robotic mitral valve replacement is revolutionary. It maintains the highest levels of care while enabling a more accurate treatment, faster recovery periods, and fewer problems. Following the procedure, the patient received elective ventilatory support and was routinely moved to the cardiac intensive care unit (ITU). On the first post-operative day, she was able to remove her supports and gain mobility. After a four-day stay, she was released because her recovery was straightforward.
