News Desk, News Nation 360 : As a first step towards opening excellent clinical care for neighbouring states, Medica Group of Hospitals, the largest private hospital chain in Eastern India, conducted Tripura’s first successful Heart Transplant and cured Ranjit Roy, a 44-year-old shopkeeper from Barjala, Sepahijala, Tripura with a successful procedure at its flagship facility Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata. He was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy (a type of heart muscle disease that causes the heart chambers (ventricles) to thin and stretch, growing larger, not allowing it to pump blood efficiently). He was at the end stage with the potential risk of heart failure and a very poor life expectancy. The team of experienced doctors from the cardiac surgery department led by Dr Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman & Senior Consultant of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata, Dr Soumyajit Ghosh, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Dr Dipanjan Chatterjee, ECMO Physician, and Critical Care Specialist at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, and the care team of Medica joined hands

together for this miraculous case. With this Tripura, the resident became the first person from that state to have his heart transplantation from Kolkata. Ranjit Roy was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and hence he was finding it difficult to carry out his daily chores. His condition was such that his life expectancy was weaning from bad to worse. He was prescribed many medications, some of which were becoming too expensive for him to bear as he is the only earning member of his family & is survived by his son, wife, and sick mother. Three months before, he took advice from Dr Kunal Sarkar who suggested him to undergo Heart Transplantation and for the same, a donor's heart was urgently required. After a long wait, on 30th December, a donor’s heart was received at Medica Hospital, Kolkata from Hiranmoy Ghoshal, a 51-year-old theatre personality, who was transferred from Burdwan to Medica Superspecialty Hospital on 28th December & was declared brain dead on 30th December. On 30th December, Ranjit Roy was asked to travel immediately from Tripura. Both the donor and recipient were at the hospital and were operated on simultaneously. This miraculous heart transplant was performed at Medica hospital which opened doors to advanced clinical care for neighbouring states as well. The entire Medica fraternity and the family of Ranjit Roy are indebted for this humane gesture by the family of the deceased late Hiranmoy Ghoshal. Dr Kunal Sarkar, who led the operation, said that they at Medica will be forever grateful to Hiranmoy Ghoshal & his family for donating his heart and saving the life of Ranjit Roy. They waited for months despite knowing that Ranjit Roy’s condition is getting weaker day by day. The heart transplant was the need of the hour and the moment we got consent from the donor’s family, they prepared ourselves for the operation simultaneously. The patient has made a very good recovery, and he will be discharged from the hospital on that day. They wished him all the very best and healthy life ahead. As doctors, they want to raise awareness about organ donation so that more lives can be saved, and they hope that more families will come forward to pledge organs.
