​ Ministry of Mines and Steel organises 6th Scrap Recycling and Waste Utilization drive held in Kolkata

News Desk. News Nation 360: India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) which is the government’s initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence. Under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030, the emphasis is laid on promoting the circular economy, reducing waste and environmental pollution wherein, the scrap metal recycling industry is playing an important role to achieve carbon neutralization targets and circular economy benefits. Looking at India’s depleting ore resources, the government is embarking on to switch over from a linear to a circular economy model with the adoption of the 6R principles of Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Recover, Redesign, and Remanufacture. To mark the celebration of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) - CIRCULAR ECONOMY Campaign – 2023 organizing 75 program which includes conference, plant visits and academic is being organized by the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Steel, Government of India in collaboration with JNARDDC and Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI). The theme of this program is based on Sustainability/Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE). Under this campaign, the Material Recycling Association of India & JNARDDC are organizing the 6th Scrap Recycling (Ferrous & Non-Ferrous) and Waste Utilisation Drive under the aegis of Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Steel “Sustainable & Circular Bharat: Towards Zero Waste in Metals Processing” on 15th June 2023. U C Joshi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Shri Subhash Kumar, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Steel and Shri S K Gupta, CMD, MSTC, Dhawal Shah, Sr VP, MRAI, Aniruddha Jhunjunwala, Director, MRAI, Dr Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC, Dr Rajesh Pandey, Principal Secretary, Department of MSME & Textile, Khalid Anwar, Commissioner of GST, Ataur Rahman, Commissioner of Customs (Port), Dr Rajesh Kumar, Member Secretary, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Dr Sushim Banerjee, CEO, IISSSC will grace the occasion as our Guest of Honor for this program.  They are also organizing an exclusive two-day plant visit by invitation only for officials from the Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Mines, NIT Naroda, and Government Engineering Colleges Metallurgical Students at Ferrous Plants:  Brand Alloys and Steel Crackers Non-Ferrous Plants: Manaksia Aluminium, Eastern Copper, Gadia Aluminium and Leadstone Energy, etc. The objective of this conference in the presence of Aniruddha Jhunjunwala, Director MRAI, Dhawala Shah, Sr VP, MRAI, S K Gupta, CMD, MSTC, U C Joshi, Jt Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Dr Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC, Subhash Kumar, Dy Secretary, Ministry of Steel is to create more awareness about Scrap Recycling and Waste Utilisation and showcase the best recycling practices of melting, scrap segregation, and processing, and understanding the challenging industry issues faced by the Metal Recycling industry based in West Bengal. This campaign emphasizes more to adopt new technologies to achieve zero carbon emissions and zero waste will enable us to achieve the sustainable development goal and converge PM’s mission LiFE which is a movement for “mindful and deliberate utilization, instead of mindless and destructive consumption” to protect and preserve the environment.
